The first week of school is the time when you set your standards and expectations for the rest of the year. Make sure you teach your students exactly how you want them to enter the classroom, how you want them to sit on the carpet, where to hang their backpacks, and even how to ask to use the bathroom! Practice these routines several times a day for several weeks, and revisit them often!

Give your students a tour of the classroom and the school to help them get acquainted with their surroundings. Teach them the expected behaviors in each environment. A fun way to do this is through songs and rhymes.

New year and new children

I am excited to share my classroom with new comers. One of the greatest things about starting a new school year is that you get to begin with a clean slate. You can decide how to decorate your room, how to organize your schedule and how to teach your students. Sometimes, though, it hits you that you just spent a whole school year teaching one class what you expect from them, and now you have to start all over again with a new class! However, nobody can deny that teaching your students appropriate behaviors right from the start is a sure-fire way to gain control of your classroom.
